Household Pipe Replacements and Upgrades

LEAD Pipes and Fittings

Rusted water pipe

Thousands of old lead pipes that continue to serve as water service lines in many older US cities continue to leach lead into drinking water. Inside many homes, water pipes are made of copper and are bonded together with lead solder. Because the use of lead solder was only banned in the US in 1987, millions of US homes contain lead-soldered copper pipes—and hot water can cause the lead to leach out from this solder. The EPA has estimated that on average up to 20% of a child's total lead exposure can potentially be attributed to lead-contaminated water. LeadCheck ® Test Kit’s or other similar sources are easy to use and are available at most local hardware stores. Your family is worth it.

Polybutylene Piping

Lead vs. polybutylene pipe

Polybutylene pipe (Poly-Pipe) was the “innovation” from the late 1970's through the mid-1990's, with stockpiles available through 1999. Polybutylene pipe is typically grey (interior) and blue or black (exterior). Chlorine added by the municipality causes Poly pipe to become brittle and crack. In addition, temperature fluctuation causes added strain by expansion and contraction of the ground causing fracturing. The result may be a leak as subtle as a constant wet spot up to water gushing out of the ground causing severe flooding and erosion. Even though the main supply line into the house ruptures before the interior; the next weakest point will be in your walls. Whichever case, Total Quality Services can easily upgrade your system, replacing it with a safe and affordable alternative. Please contact us for an in home estimate.
